2010 PDC A GREAT SUCCESS!

October 22, 2010, Georgian Manor Resort and Country Club
Town of Collingwood, ON
Theme: "Going Green with Density" - with a focus on Intensification Infill and Recreational Planning.

The Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians held a very successful conference which was held at Georgian Manor Resort and Country Club in Collingwood. This location in the heart of Ontario's four season destination area was the perfect locale to highlight our conference theme. All seats were filled in the ballroom, an indication of the interest and enthusiasm for the event. The feedback we have received to date has been extremely positive.

The theme is GOING GREEN WITH DENSITY with a focus on Intensification, Infill and Recreational Planning. This is a very timely topic and will be of interest to those involved in all aspects of planning and we have the perfect locale to investigate these issues

We had an exciting day of presentations, workshops and tours. Mayor Carrier welcomed the delegates and gave an interesting and informative background on historical and current development in Collingwood. Darryl Lyons, Senior Planner with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing provided a primer on the Provincial Policy framework with a focus on the day's topic that was most enlightening and presented in Darryl's captivating style. His presentation began with a fascinating flyover of related areas in Ontario. Kris Menzies, Partner, MHBC, specializes in resort development and has vast knowledge and experience in the subject which she shared with our delegates. Kris began her informative presentation by providing insight into the legislative background affecting such developments and continued by providing many superb examples from of real projects. Jamie Shipley, Senior Advisor, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation gave an update on neighbourhoods that are part of the exciting research initiative seeking to develop healthy sustainable communities that are energy efficient and economically viable.

As always our afternoon workshops and tours provided an interactive forum for all delegates. Robert Voigt, Acting Senior Planner with the Town of Collingwood illustrated how a small Municipality was able to be creative and innovative in preparing an Urban Design Manual. Brian Hutchison, Principle, Bri-Tech Design Solutions and Mark and Ann Rogowski from MERTech Inc. shared their experiences in developing their own businesses with insights and illustrations. Delegates came away with a good understanding of the process. Fred Serrafero, Vice President, FRAM Building Group, lead a tour of the innovative and award winning Shipyards Development. Dr. Greg Baeker, AuthentiCity and our own Kandas Bondarchuk provided an informative workshop on Leading Practice in Cultural Mapping from their work in Collingwood, which was followed by a tour of LEED Certified Collingwood Library. All workshops and tours were very well received.

2009 CACPT Professional Development Conference

Held on October 16, 2009, LIUNA Station Hamilton

Photos can be Found on CACPT Facebook

The Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians held a very successful conference on Heritage Planning entitled "Preserving Our Past". Over 200 registered delegates were able to listen to some of the Province and Country's experts on the Heritage Act and Heritage Preservation and Development from many points of view. The day also included a tour of many of Hamilton's fine preserved and restored historic buildings plus workshops from CHMC and on Workload Management. The comments were very positive including such statements as "the speakers were entertaining, and very knowledgeable", "we learned so much", "the best yet", and many more affirmative remarks.

The conference was held in LIUNA Station which is an outstanding example of heritage renovation and reuse as it was a former CN Station. The venue was captivating in itself and a perfect location for learning about heritage planning.

MISSED THE 2009 CONFERENCE - Addition details can be found in our Newletter TechTalk - Winter 2010 (CACPT homepage) and Photos on Facebook.
